| Why Summer in Nantucket Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List

There are destinations that live up to the hype, and then there is Nantucket. What started as a Memorial Day weekend getaway quickly turned into a six-night island escape that left me already planning a return. From historic cobblestone streets and iconic lighthouses to unforgettable seafood, quiet beaches, and friendly people, Nantucket delivers everything people love about a New England summer vacation.

Located about 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts, Nantucket offers a unique blend of coastal elegance, maritime history, world-class dining, and laid-back island living. Whether you’re planning your first visit or looking for new ideas for a return trip, this guide covers exactly where to stay, where to eat, what to do, and the special summer events that make Nantucket one of the most desirable summer destinations in the United States.

| Where to Stay in Nantucket

For my visit, I stayed in town, and I would highly recommend it for first-time visitors. Being within walking distance of Main Street allows for easy access to shops, restaurants, galleries, and the harbor without constantly relying on transportation.

One of the best things about staying near downtown Nantucket is that nearly everything feels accessible. Mornings can start with a coffee walk along the waterfront, afternoons can be spent browsing boutiques and antique stores, and evenings can end with dinner and cocktails without ever needing to drive.

The town itself feels like a living postcard, with historic homes, beautifully maintained gardens, and centuries of maritime history around every corner.

If you have to book accommodations, it is better to start planning at least a few months in advanced since hotels can get booked out quickly. These are some of the accommodations you should consider based on your preferred location, size, and design:

• The Brant – Located in Brant Point, this hotel is hidden within a group of historic houses. Brand Point is also a short walk to downtown, providing access to the main shopping and dining.
• The White Elephant – Located on Nantucket Harbor, The White Elephant takes the decor of the quintessential Nantucket style with nautical touches. The hotel also offers a full-service spa overlooking the harbor.
• Greydon House – A boutique hotel in the historic downtown designed by Roman & Williams. Greydon House is great for design lovers and guests looking for a quiet, personal stay, in the heart of Nantucket.
• The Wauwinet – The Wauwinet is one of the most iconic hotels in Nantucket. The hotel is one of the most secluded in the island and it is surrounded by two beaches and a wildlife sanctuary. Guest rooms are decorated in a Northeastern country style.
• Faraway – Another boutique hotel in the heart of historic downtown with a trendy feel. Faraway offers the perfect balance between charming contemporary-classic and stylish boutique chic.

| What to Do in Nantucket During Summer

Explore Historic Downtown Nantucket

Walking through downtown is the perfect introduction to the island. Head to Main Street after getting situated at your accommodation. The cobblestone streets are lined with boutiques, art galleries, antique shops, and historic buildings that showcase Nantucket’s timeless character. Taking a few hours to simply wander around will help you get oriented and appreciate the island’s unique charm.

Watch the Figawi Arrivals

One of the highlights of visiting during Memorial Day weekend is experiencing the excitement surrounding the annual Figawi Race Weekend. If visiting during this weekend, make sure to walk along the harbor and watch sailboats arrive after their journey from Cape Cod. The energy around town is incredible, and it feels like the unofficial kickoff to summer on Nantucket.

Visit Brant Point Lighthouse

No trip to Nantucket is complete without a visit to Brant Point Lighthouse. The short walk from town offers beautiful harbor views and an opportunity to admire some of the island’s stunning coastal homes. It’s one of the most photographed locations on Nantucket and an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll.

Walk the Siasconset Bluff Walk

One of my favorite experiences on the island was visiting Siasconset, affectionately known as “Sconset.” The Bluff Walk takes visitors behind some of Nantucket’s most beautiful homes while offering spectacular ocean views along the eastern shore. The cottages here look like something out of a storybook, covered in roses and hydrangeas during the summer months. At the end of the walk, you’ll find Sankaty Head Lighthouse standing proudly above the cliffs with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and nearby golf course.

Learn Nantucket’s History at the Whaling Museum

For anyone interested in the island’s fascinating past, the Whaling Museum is an absolute must. The museum provides incredible insight into Nantucket’s whaling heritage and explains how the industry shaped the island’s economy, architecture, and culture. It adds an entirely new perspective to everything you’ll see while exploring town.

Visit Bartlett’s Farm

A stop at Bartlett’s Farm quickly becomes part of the visitor’s routine. The farm market offers fresh produce, pastries, prepared foods, and local products that are perfect for stocking your room or rental home. Make sure to visit during peak tomato season, although, you will still find plenty of delicious items to enjoy regardless.

Browse the Hospital Thrift Shop

I typically don’t prioritize thrift shopping while traveling, but Nantucket’s Hospital Thrift Shop completely changed my perspective. The quality and variety of items available were impressive, ranging from antiques and artwork to books and home décor. It’s a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the island’s character and history.

Relax at Steps Beach

Nantucket is surrounded by plenty of beach areas, but one of the most beautiful beaches is Steps Beach. Grab a sandwich in Sconset and spend a few relaxing hours soaking up the sun and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the beach. The dramatic staircase leading down to the beach creates a memorable entrance and offers excellent photo opportunities.

Spend an Afternoon at Cisco Brewers

Even as a traveler who don’t typically seek out breweries, Cisco Brewers completely won me over. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, featuring live music, food vendors, and an extensive selection of beer, wine, and cocktails. Between the oysters, lobster quesadillas, and festive summer crowd, it quickly became one of my favorite places on the island.

| Where to Eat in Nantucket

Cru

Located directly on the harbor waterfront, the restaurant combines upscale coastal dining with spectacular marina views. Highlights included the chilled Spanish octopus, escargot, beef carpaccio, and broiled sea scallops. If you’re looking for a place to celebrate with champagne and caviar, this is it.

The Nautilus

If I had to choose the best meal of the trip, The Nautilus would probably take the crown. The inventive tapas-style menu encouraged sharing, allowing a group to sample nearly everything. Favorites included the tempura East Coast oyster tacos, Vietnamese beef tataki salad, and grilled pork riblets.

For larger groups, reserving the Captain’s Table well in advance is highly recommended.

Galley Beach

Although I visited for lunch, Galley Beach immediately struck me as one of the best sunset dining spots on the island. The crab cakes were excellent, and the beachfront setting creates an unforgettable Nantucket experience.

Brotherhood of Thieves

An iconic Nantucket institution, Brotherhood of Thieves surprised me with its excellent sushi menu while still delivering classic tavern favorites like burgers and fish sandwiches. The upstairs and downstairs dining rooms offer completely different atmospheres, making it worth exploring both.

One of Nantucket’s classic dining destinations, American Seasons combines an intimate atmosphere with expertly prepared seasonal cuisine. The Colorado lamb breast was the standout dish and remains one of the best meals I enjoyed during my visit.

For something lighter and more unique, Lemon Press offers a fresh Mediterranean-inspired menu in a beautiful setting. The Persia Nachos were particularly memorable, blending Mediterranean flavors with a creative twist on traditional nachos.

Creative cocktails and standout dishes made this a memorable dinner stop. The beef tartare was easily the highlight of the meal and one of my favorite appetizers on the island.

Claudette’s

Located on Sconset, Claudette is a small venue that offers a variety of elaborate sandwiches. Their turkey salad sandwich is phenomenal. Simple, fresh, and incredibly satisfying.

Downyflake

These are the best doughnuts in town and definitely a must to try during your stay. This little gem sells out of its best doughnuts early in the morning so be sure to wake up early and get a dozen as it is quite popular.

Known for oversized sandwiches and a spacious outdoor picnic area, Something Natural is perfect for families, groups, or anyone looking for a casual lunch in a beautiful setting.

| Final Thoughts: Is Nantucket Worth Visiting in Summer?

Absolutely. The best aspect wasn’t just the scenery, the food, or the history, it was how welcoming the island felt. Every restaurant, shop, and interaction seemed to reflect genuine hospitality and pride in the community.

I explored historic neighborhoods, walked along dramatic coastal cliffs, relaxed on beautiful beaches, enjoyed some of the freshest seafood I’ve ever tasted, and discovered why so many people return year after year.

Nantucket exceeded every expectation I had. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway, a family vacation, or a trip with friends, summer on Nantucket offers a blend of charm, sophistication, and coastal beauty that is difficult to find anywhere else.

For me, it was a 10 out of 10 experience and one I believe every traveler should experience at least once.
