There’s something magical about traveling during the holidays, it’s a mix of crisp air, sparkling lights, nostalgic rituals, and the rare joy of experiencing familiar places through a seasonal lens. Over the years, I’ve wandered through locations that each bring something unique to the festive season. From glittering skylines and lively ambiance to cozy mountain towns and sun-kissed beaches where holiday lights shimmer on the water, here are five destinations in the U.S and the Caribbean that captured my heart during the most wonderful time of the year.
| New York City, NY
Best for: Travelers who crave big city holiday magic, sparkling lights, and classic Christmas traditions.

New York is a holiday travel bucket list for most, and for a good reason; it’s dramatic, cinematic, and overflowing with energy. Visiting in December feels like stepping into a snow-dusted movie set, with Fifth Avenue windows glowing, Bryant Park buzzing with skaters and vendors, and the city humming with anticipation. It’s one of the busiest times of the year, so be prepared for big crowds, especially on touristy spots, but the magic outweighs the madness. There’s a certain joy in wandering Manhattan while the lights reflect off the cold pavement and, with some luck, it starts snowing in the city, making your visit a bit merrier.

Recommended activities:
- Stroll through the Bryant Park Winter Village for skating, shopping, innovative food stations and hot drinks.
- Ice-skate under the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree – perfect spot for a photo opportunity.
- Walk Fifth Avenue to shop and see the legendary department-store holiday window displays.
- Explore the Union Square or Columbus Circle holiday markets for local gifts.
- Catch the Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes or watch any of the fabulous shows on Broadway.
| Asheville, NC
Best for: Cozy winter escapes, mountain lovers, and travelers seeking a relaxed, artsy holiday atmosphere.

Asheville brings a nostalgic, hometown charm to the holidays. The Blue Ridge Mountains create a cozy backdrop, and the city’s creative spirit makes everything feel handmade and heartfelt. Winter in Asheville feels like a warm embrace: locally roasted coffee shops glowing with tiny lights, festive craft breweries, and a downtown that mixes Appalachian tradition with modern artistry. The slower pace is refreshing if you’re used to big-city holiday chaos.

Recommended activities:
- Experience the Biltmore Estate’s Candlelight Christmas Evenings (Highly recommended!).
- Visit the Omni Grove Park Inn to see its National Gingerbread House Competition displays.
- Wander Asheville’s River Arts District for art studios with exhibitions, and shop for handcrafted, locally made gifts.
- Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway for winter scenery and mountain overlooks.
- Take a day trip or short weekend trip to the ski resorts of North Carolina.
| Nassau, Bahamas
Best for: Warm-weather holiday travelers looking for sun, beaches, Caribbean culture, and festive island celebrations.

Nassau offers an entirely different kind of holiday magic: sun-soaked days, turquoise water, and warm breezes instead of wool coats and scarves. It’s perfect for escaping winter without losing the festive atmosphere. Resorts, marinas, and downtown streets shimmer with Caribbean-style holiday decorations, and the island’s easygoing spirit makes it feel like the holidays are meant to be savored slowly. Plus, the local celebrations leading up to Junkanoo add a cultural richness that’s unforgettable.

Recommended activities:
- Have the best time at Baha Mar casino after a Christmas Eve dinner at any one of Rosewood’s fine restaurants.
- Experience the energy and color of Junkanoo festivities (or pre-parade events).
- Relax on the beach with seasonal cocktails while enjoying warm, sunny holiday weather.
- Explore the festive decor around Paradise Island, Atlantis, and the marina.
- Explore a number of water sport activities and the water park at Baha Mar.
| San Francisco & Napa Valley, CA
Best for: A sophisticated holiday getaway blending city charm, scenic wine country, and seasonal culinary experiences.

Northern California during the holidays offers a blend of urban charm and countryside serenity. In San Francisco, the fog mixes with holiday lights to create a dreamy atmosphere, and iconic sights like Union Square and the Ferry Building take on a festive glow. Drive north and Napa Valley becomes a tranquil, indulgent escape: rolling vineyards, fireplaces, elegant tasting rooms, and seasonal menus that feel tailor-made for wintertime comfort.

Recommended activities:
- Ride a cable car decorated for the season for a classic San Francisco experience.
- Explore the Embarcadero Center’s lights and waterfront views.
- Visit the Fairmont’s 22-foot Gingerbread House and admire the beauty of the hotel’s holiday decor.
- Explore the charming town of St. Helena and shop for gifts at their local stores.
- Book a tasting tour at a Napa Valley winery or ride the Napa Valley Wine Train on a holiday-themed journey through the vineyards.
- Choose from the extensive list of Michelin-star restaurants in the area to enjoy the finest holiday dinner (extra points if you score a reservation at The French Laundry).
| Las Vegas, NV
Best for: Festive nightlife, dazzling light displays, and travelers who want an over-the-top holiday experience.

If you want your holidays bold, bright, and over-the-top, Las Vegas is the place. You may think of Las Vegas as an unexpected destination for the holidays, but December here is an explosion of lights and spectacle, even more than usual, with resorts competing to out-sparkle each other. Vegas in the holidays is surprisingly fun and surprisingly festive: elaborate decorations, themed shows, and a celebratory buzz that lasts all night. Beneath all the neon, there’s also winter desert beauty if you choose to explore beyond the Strip.

Recommended activities:
- Explore the Bellagio Conservatory’s elaborate holiday floral installation.
- Watch a seasonal Cirque du Soleil show or themed holiday performance.
- Visit the LINQ Promenade for its festive decorations and holiday music.
- Wander through hotel lobbies like the Venetian and Wynn for over-the-top holiday displays.
- Surround yourself in the holiday lights at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway’s Glittering Lights drive-through.
Final Thoughts
The holidays have a way of transforming the places we visit, revealing their most charming and spirited sides. Whether you’re wandering through a snowy metropolis, settling into a mountain retreat, indulging in wine-country tranquility, or escaping to a tropical coastline, each destination offers a unique way to celebrate the season.
These five holiday destinations in the U.S. and Caribbean encompass a wide range of travel types. Vacationers looking for a traditional city holiday may prefer New York City. Others seeking mountain charm and artsy towns may prefer Asheville. People wanting to escape the cold and enjoy the sun may want to book a flight to The Bahamas. Casino-lovers and people looking for show-stopping moments may want to visit Las Vegas. Then, there’s couples looking for the outstanding dining scene and a more elegant setting in California’s Bay Area and wine country.
There are many more bucket-list holiday destinations I’d like to explore within the U.S. and internationally. Nonetheless, these five holiday destinations in the U.S. and Caribbean hold a special place in my travel memories – a reminder that the magic of the holidays isn’t just about where you are, but how you feel while you’re there.
